Internships

Internships

  • Internships let you “test the waters” to see what a field is really about - a great way to explore

  • Internships give you valuable experience and help you build your resume

  • If you don’t do co-op, internships and other experiential work experiences distinguish you in your after-graduation job search

Internships Can Be...

  • paid or unpaid

  • part-time or full-time

  • summer or during the school year

Many large companies have formal, competitive internship programs posted on their websites in the careers or jobs section, under Campus or College or Internships. Formal internship programs mean you need to plan ahead - as early as November - so you don’t miss deadlines.

If You Need Academic Credit For An Internship

To receive academic credit through Career Services for an internship, you must register and pay for MCOPU 181, Internship for Career Decision Making, a 1-credit class which is offered during Northeastern's fall, spring and summer sessions. This class is only for students participating in internships where the employer requires the student to receive credit, and students should not register for the course until they have spoken with Tina Mello in Career Services.
Homework is assigned in conjunction with the internship, and students receive a pass/fail grade. Students do not need to be in Boston, as most communications and assignments are done via email and Blackboard.

Prepare For Finding An Internship Just As You Would For Finding A Job:

  • Research your target

  • Polish your resume

  • Write a cover letter OR a letter of inquiry

  • Network! Talk to friends, family, family of friends and people at companies you are interested in

  • Apply, following the posting’s instructions to the letter

Best Time To Look?

The more comptetive the internship is, the earlier you look. Start in October for big company internships, in late January for others. Keep looking because they are posted continually. Watch for Cool Summer Jobs in the Calendar in January - for people looking for summer jobs and internships.
